{"id":1770,"date":"2016-06-10T21:09:23","date_gmt":"2016-06-10T20:09:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mic1024.wordpress.com\/?p=1770"},"modified":"2016-06-10T21:09:23","modified_gmt":"2016-06-10T20:09:23","slug":"the-land-of-extinct-volcanoes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/samsel.org\/index.php\/2016\/06\/10\/the-land-of-extinct-volcanoes\/","title":{"rendered":"The Land of Extinct Volcanoes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>is the &#8216;nickname&#8217; of the area we visited today.\u00a0Millions of years ago the\u00a0extracting from underground magma froze and created many interesting shapes.\u00a0You can find more information about the greater region <a href=\"http:\/\/lscl.eu\/the-land-of-extinct-volcanoes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.palackrotoszyce.pl\/en\/the-hotel\/area-attractions\/the-land-of-extinct-volcanoes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We had a half a day to spare, and set our heads towards mysterious, and relatively new (in bolted climbing terms) <a href=\"https:\/\/pl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diablak_(Pog%C3%B3rze_Kaczawskie)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diablak<\/a>, a relatively small hill in the Kaczawskie Foothills region.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s climbable part, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piachy.eu\/topo\/diablak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">25m basalt crag <\/a>has been first explored in 2012. 9 fully bolted routes were set there \u00a0in 5 to 6c+ range (french sports) (although in Poland routes are graded in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wojciech_Kurtyka\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kurtyka scale<\/a> [so technically \u00a0they are graded V to VI.2+) [<a href=\"https:\/\/pl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skala_trudno%C5%9Bci_dr%C3%B3g_skalnych#Por.C3.B3wnanie_skal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conversion tables<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Monika, Piotr (her brother in law) and i left Jelenia Gora around 10.30, and after 30 mins drive we were walking in the woods looking for the crag.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width:auto;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/iJ0BueK5v0gNixKoJiBIAdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=embedwebsite\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-n3aOwpJL-9s\/V1sUzN-Rp8I\/AAAAAAAAIYA\/N6ORQvyV2poP6GTPr0vzG9eRd-ZJUfM4QCCo\/s800\/IMAG3615.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"452\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"font-family:arial, sans-serif;font-size:11px;text-align:right;\">From <a href=\"https:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/110140930742215029609\/6294647675741224641?authuser=0&amp;feat=embedwebsite\">diablak<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>It&#8217;s a really short walk, albeit it&#8217;s easy to get lost, so having good map is rather recommended. I actually overshot the chains, and topped out on a massive ledge above them. Luckily there were another 2 bolts, from which I belayed Monika and Piotr (as it was impossible to setup TR there).<\/p>\n<p>Next, we moved left to the route number 6 &#8211; Poligon (V). (Translated as Left and Right Adam&#8217;s rib).<\/p>\n<p>Both are a series of little roofs on very steep wall, with amazing holds everywhere. A bit more steeper, but good holds.<\/p>\n<p>Overall all routes are well protected, although there isn&#8217;t too many of them. If you want to try basalt rock and half 1\/2 day then maybe it&#8217;s worth the trip.<\/p>\n<p>But with surplus of climbing in nearby <a href=\"http:\/\/culture.pl\/en\/article\/a-foreigners-guide-to-rock-climbing-in-poland#second-menu-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sudety<\/a>\u00a0and its Sokolik crag in particular (where we will be going tomorrow), it&#8217;d be hard to justify going back to Diablak.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>is the &#8216;nickname&#8217; of the area we visited today.\u00a0Millions of years ago the\u00a0extracting from underground magma froze and created many interesting shapes.\u00a0You can find more information about the greater region here\u00a0and here.
